This week in Year 6 we have been mummifying fish! The Ancient Egpytians believed that to be able to reach the afterlife, they needed to be mummified in a special ceremony. The ceremony involves several steps! First the body has to be prepared and preserved.

  1. Wash the body in the water of the River Nile
  2. Remove the intestines, liver, lungs (gills), and stomach
  3. Place the organs into canopic jars
  4. Place the fish on a thin layer of natron, then cover the rest of the body completely with natron. This serves to prevent the body from drying out

We now must wait 40 days and night before we can complete our entombing ceremony!

It was a thoroughly engaging and squeamish afternoon!
