You may have noticed that your child sometimes comes home looking a little messy and we just wanted to reassure you that this is a very good thing!

In Reception, learning is hands-on. We spend lots of time exploring, creating and investigating through play. This includes plenty of messy play with mud, paint, water, sand and other wonderful materials.

Our children are busy learning and playing on the floor, kneeling down, digging in the mud, painting, building and getting stuck into their activities. We want them to feel free to explore without worrying about keeping their clothes perfectly clean.

So please don’t worry if there is a little paint or mud on their uniform. It is often a sign that they have been busy learning, experimenting and having fun! They certainly don't need to come to school in a perfectly clean outfit every day.

Spare clothes

Please make sure your child has a complete set of spare clothes on their peg, including underwear and socks. Accidents and messy play are all part of life in Reception!

Please label everything

Please make sure that ALL items of clothing, including coats, jumpers, cardigans, hats and spare clothes, are clearly labelled with your child's name. With so many similar items in our classroom, labels make it much easier for us to return belongings to the right child.

Thank you for helping us to give the children the freedom to explore, get messy and enjoy their learning.

A little mud, paint or grass stain is a small price to pay for a day full of playing, exploring and learning!
