This term, Year 6 have been learning about the fascinating traditions of Ancient Egypt, including the process of mummification. To bring history to life, we started our very own experiment – mummifying a fish!

The Ancient Egyptians believed preserving the body was essential for the afterlife. They used a special salt called natron to dry out bodies before wrapping them in linen. In class, we recreated the first stages of this process using a mixture of salt and baking soda.

So far, we have cleaned the fish and completely covered it in our salt mixture. This will help remove moisture and prevent decay, just like the Egyptians did thousands of years ago. Now, the fish will stay buried in the salt for 40 days – the same length of time used in the real mummification process!

We can’t wait to see the results and continue learning about the history behind this ancient tradition. Stay tuned for updates!
