The Very Hungry Caterpillar
This week in Reception we have been very excited to receive our delivery of five tiny caterpillars. The children have been fascinated by them and have loved observing them closely as they grow a little more each day. We have been learning all about the life cycle of a caterpillar and talking about what might happen next. There has been lots of curiosity and thoughtful discussion as the children share their ideas and predictions.
We also enjoyed reading the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar together. The children created their own story maps to help them retell the story, remembering key events and using wonderful language from the book. It has been lovely to see their confidence grow as they share the story with their friends.
In addition, we have been keeping a close eye on our sunflowers. The children have been measuring how much they have grown and comparing changes over time. This has led to lots of mathematical thinking as we talk about height and growth.
In phonics we have been recapping the sounds y, z and zz. The children have been practising recognising and writing these sounds and have been using them to write simple captions in their phonics books. We are really pleased with the effort they are putting into their writing and sounding out words.
It has been a week full of wonder and discovery as we explore the natural world around us. Perhaps your child can tell you about what they think will happen to our caterpillars next.
