This week our learning has been inspired by the classic tale The Gingerbread Man, and what a fantastic week of storytelling and exploring it has been!

The children have absolutely loved becoming confident storytellers, using the puppet shows they created themselves to retell the story. It has been wonderful to see them using expressive voices, repeating familiar phrases, and remembering the order of the tale.

We also enjoyed lots of hands-on activities. The children used our ginger-scented playdough to roll, cut and shape their very own gingerbread men—our classroom has never smelt so delicious! Later in the week, we decorated real gingerbread biscuits, carefully adding icing and treats to bring our tasty characters to life.

In our investigation area, we asked a big question:
How else could the Gingerbread Man cross the river?
The children had brilliant ideas—boats, bridges, tunnels and even wings! Then we wondered together what might happen if he did fall into the water. We tested it out and were amazed to see the gingerbread man grow bigger, get soggy, and eventually disappear as he dissolved. The children were fascinated and full of questions!

In phonics, we have been busy learning the new sounds e, u, r, and ck. We also discovered that when two letters come together to make one sound, it’s called a digraph. The children are really beginning to use their growing phonics knowledge in their early reading and writing.

It has been a week full of curiosity, creativity and wonderful learning. Well done Reception. what superb storytellers and scientists you are becoming!
