This week we have been enjoying the story Mr Wolf’s Pancakes by Jan Fearnley. The children quickly recognised many familiar characters from other traditional tales and loved spotting them throughout the story. They were especially amazed by the twist at the end and had lots to say about whether they thought Mr Wolf’s actions were fair.

We carried out our own pancake taste test and made predictions about which topping we would prefer. The choices were lemon and sugar or golden syrup with banana. Before tasting, many children thought they would prefer the sweeter option, but most were pleasantly surprised by how much they enjoyed lemon and sugar and even changed their minds afterwards. It was wonderful to see them using their language skills to describe the flavours and explain their choices.

In phonics, we have been learning the sounds oa and igh. The children have also been assessed on their phonics knowledge this week and were very keen to show off their growing confidence and skills. We are so proud of the progress they are making.

In maths, we have been revisiting and consolidating previous learning. To support this at home, you could give your child five small objects such as pennies or buttons and ask them how many different ways they can make five. For example, they might find combinations such as three and two or four and one. Encouraging them to explain their thinking really helps to deepen their understanding.

Have a lovely half term break. We cannot believe we are already halfway through Reception!
