3B – London Eye

3B had a fantastic visit to the London Eye, as part of their birds-eye view topic.

After a lovely walk along the River Thames looking at lots of famous buildings, we were ready for our trip on the London Eye.

From the top of the wheel, we could see all the way across London, and it was fun to look down and see how small everything looked.

The next day, we wrote all about our visit in our Literacy lesson

Year 3 Home Learning 31.1.19

A mnemonic is a way of remembering the spelling of tricky words. For example, because = Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants. Think of some mnemonics for words you find tricky!

Next week we’ll practise words starting with ’wr’ that sound like /r/ such as write, wrong and wrap. Can you think of any more?

We’ll continue to learn the 8 times table. Can you answer any 8 multiplication fact instantly?

1B’s Egg Drop Challenge

This week, we received a letter from Farmer Ben inviting us to take part in ‘The Egg Drop Challenge!’

He challenged us to design a container that would keep a chick egg safe if accidentally dropped!

First, in pairs, we designed our containers…

Then, we made them using junk modelling and other resources…

Can you remember what materials you used and why?

Finally, we tested our containers…

The results…

Were your predictions correct? Did your egg survive the drop?

Troll Week – The Three Billy Goat’s Gruff

This week we have been reading the traditional tale ‘The Three Billy Goat’s Gruff’. We made a new home for the trolls. We planned our ideas and then selected the resources we needed to create these beautiful bridges. Elizabeth and Sarah made a village with a slide and a bedroom for the troll family.

We wrote our own traditional tales, we thought about character, setting the problem and the solution. Our stories are proudly displayed in our classroom. IMG_7284IMG_7282IMG_7286IMG_7283IMG_7292IMG_7287IMG_7289IMG_7281

We designed and made clothes for the trolls and ponies. We worked hard to measure the material and learnt how to join the fabric together so that it was secure.

We painted pictures of trolls.

Did you know that trolls smell really bad! Well, not anymore – thanks to Purple Class they now smell delightful.

We made perfume for the trolls…IMG_7139IMG_7140

Design for Life Song

Faraday gave us power
Edison came and set it free
With the light bulb,
Powered by elect-ricity.

John Logie Baird
Gave TV to the human race
And without Darwin
We might not know from where we came

All hail Marie Curie,
She developed radiotherapy
And Alexander Flemings friends
Have saved many lives in the end

A design for life

A design for life
A design for life

Da Vinci and Aristotle
Babbage and Ada Lovelace
Tim Berners Lee
All made the world, from where I came

All hail Marie Curie,
She developed radiotherapy
And Alexander Flemings friends
Have saved many lives in the end

A design for life

1L’s Egg Drop Challenge

Today, we tested our egg containers that we had designed and made with our partners.

We thought about which materials would be best to protect an egg. It was very ‘eggciting’! Which materials were most protective? Why? Were your predictions correct?

These containers worked..

Why?

These containers didn’t work…

Why?

Some eggs broke, some were kept safe but we all had great fun! We can now tell the farmer which container will carry the eggs safely! We can’t wait to get the chick eggs on Monday!
